Like shopping, dining in Cozumel centers around San Miguel. The island's 90-plus restaurants and cafes cater to every budget and taste.

There is a surprising variety of ethnic dining, from Italian to French and Lebanese to Japanese.

Here is a selection of the top restaurants:

La Choza

Open-air restaurant on Calle Rosado Salas at the corner of Av 10 Norte. The price of your main course at lunch and dinner includes a choice of soups. If you visit here for lunch, ask about the daily specials. Prices for the unadvertised lunch specials will be significantly cheaper than similar meals on the menu. Lunch and dinner favorites are the pork in tomato sauce and seafood either grilled or Vera Cruz style. La Choza serves the best beef fajitas and margaritas in Cozumel. This place is a good choice for breakfast too.

Pancho's Backyard

Pancho's Backyard is on the corner of Av Rafael Melgar and Calle 8 Norte. It is the site of one of the oldest tourist hotels in Cozumel. The area that is now the restaurant was formally the hotel lobby and it is a lovely setting. The food is very good and offers some interesting modern twists on standard Mexican dishes but at a higher price than most other Mexican restaurants in town.

Pepe's Grill

Located on the corner of Av Rafael Melgar and Calle Rosado Salas. This is the nicest salad bar in town. Try to sit upstairs by a window for a great ocean view. A reservation during the busy seasons and holidays is not a bad idea. The local seafood and steaks are recommended.

Prima Trattoria

Located near the central square on Calle Rosado Salas upstairs over Roberto's black coral store. This is an American owned and operated restaurant with surprisingly good food. Nightly specials like imported Angus Beef or Lobster can be expensive but for homemade pasta, one of the better pizzas in town, salads and other Italian specials we find the prices to be relatively moderate. It also has a rooftop garden.
